Press | Top selling New Zealand natural skincare range enhanced by scientific investigations | The Natural Beauty Yearbook, December 2011

A scientifically validated organic beauty brand from New Zealand is proving to be a cult brand amongst its followers, with its unique combination of bioactive native plant extracts and uplifting fragrances.

The Antipodes beauty range, which features ingredients as diverse as New Zealand manuka honey and Totora, Himalayan goji berries and Teatree from Australia, specialises in organic, natural skincare products, which minimise exposure to harmful chemicals. Now, scientific investigations have shown that the Antipodes beauty collection not only richly hydrates and enhances skin vitality, many products also address the signs of early ageing by boosting collagen production in human skin cells. Antipodes creator and director Elizabeth Barbalich says this scientific validation has strengthened her commitment to using only natural and organic ingredients. “It is always a wonder to me that the very best products for skincare are the ones created by nature, rather than using synthetic ingredients,” she says. “For example, our Avocado Pear Nourishing Night Cream, which is created from manuka flower, avocado, macadamia and potent antioxidant vinanza grape has been scientifically shown to actually stimulate synthesis of Type 1 collagen in human skin cells by 92 per cent. And we now know that skin with high levels of collagen is tangibly softer, smoother and much less prone to blemishes in women of all ages.”

Nature’s best ingredients Key to Elizabeth’s list of essential ingredients is 100 per cent extra virgin organic avocado oil, created from a single-press process and grown in the sun-drenched orchards of northern New Zealand. This deeply-penetrating oil is comprised of essential fatty acids, and is high in vitamins A, B1, B2, D and E, as well as the antioxidant chlorophyll. To this is added a selection of unique plant extracts, many found only in New Zealand. The kawakawa, pohutakawa or manuka flower have important anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, as well as being rich in antioxidants. “We have scoured the globe for other highly effective ingredients, like the Reishi mushroom of immortality, which has been used by Chinese herbalists for thousands of years,” Elizabeth says. “Our fragrances, such as our combinations of jasmine, ylang ylang and orange blossom, are designed to stimulate the wearer’s senses as well as leaving a long-lingering scent. All are free from synthetic compounds.”

Certified organic, sustainable and green The Antipodes commitment to sustainable production can be seen in all aspects of the company’s operations. Half of Antipodes’ 20 products are certified organic – a rigorous process of testing that ensures every raw ingredient can be sourced back to the orchard or forest in which it was grown. All packaging is 100 per cent recyclable and paper products are sourced only from sustainable forests. Each product is tested for sensitive skin. “Customers can be assured no Antipodes product has been tested on animals and is suitable for use by vegetarians. In fact, our range has accreditation from both the Vegetarian Society of the United Kingdom and AsureQuality Ltd, the leading provider of food safety and biosecurity standards in the Southern Hemisphere,” Elizabeth says. “Antipodes is a carbon-zero certified business, as accredited by carboNZero. Any environmental impact production processes cause is offset by our commitment to carbon neutrality. We choose to work with partners who have a proven track record in sustainability and energy efficiency.”
